Derived from advancing British Rail AC technology, and originally being described as the Class 87/2, the Class 90 was designed to get the UK’s electric rolling stock roster up to speed, as widespread electrification had outpaced locomotive construction. The 87/2 scheme was seen as a way of quickly procuring an additional fleet of modernised locos based on a successful frame but was reclassified when the design changed significantly.
