In the history of American locomotives, few diesels are more famous nor left a greater legacy than the Electro-Motive F3. Successor to the landmark EMD FT and the first of the fabled “F-units” rated at 1,500 horsepower, the F3 went to work for over 50 U. S. railroads across the breadth of the continent. Between 1945 and 1949, Electro-Motive built more than 1,800 of the classic streamlined diesels and the F3 type would go on to record a long and successful operating career that continues to this day.
